about

“TRAVELGUIDES” (led by bassist / composer Damon Banks) has been described as a multi-media “sound system” that takes the listener/viewer on a global music odyssey where infectious rhythms and unforgettable melodies collide with sonic soundscapes, stunning visuals and spoken word. The concept behind the creation of this record emanates from the composer’s desire to tell stories about his experiences as a world traveller, a global musician, and a student of world culture. More than a musical group, Banks will be using this project as an ongoing collaborative environment where visual artists, choreographers, playwrights, storytellers and composers will work in tandem to present exciting, creative work to live audiences around the world.

Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Damon Banks has performed with and / or recorded with some of the entertainment industry’s brightest stars, creative artists and innovative musicians. Most of these artists defy category and genre. These artists include:

George Benson, Peter Gabriel, Caetano Veloso, Angelique Kidjo, Hassan Hakmoun, Chico Hamilton, Hubert Laws, Arto Lindsay, The Neville Brothers, Bobby Womack, Loose Ends, Ronny Jordan, Eileen Ivers, Karsh Kale, Phyllis Hyman, Majek Fashek, “Wadada” Leo Smith, KRS-ONE, Marc Ribot, Noel Pointer, Phyllis Hyman, George Howard, Sekou Sundiata, DJ. SPOOKY, Min Xiao-Fen, Ntozake Shange, Adam Rudolph, Saul Williams, Roxane Butterfly, Meli’sa Morgan and Eric Gadd (to name a few)

He has written songs on several albums, including the Grammy nominated Miki Howard album “Three Wishes”. Says Damon, “I am thrilled to be able to launch a project that allows me to explore different ways to communicate ideas, creatively tackle topics that inspire me and interact with extremely talented friends.”
